The Role of Â鶹ÊÓƵ in Achieving Climate Resilience (COP27 event)
Time: 13:00 - 14:30 (EET)
The Republic of Tajikistan is co-hosting a COP27 side event with the Â鶹ÊÓƵ (Â鶹ÊÓƵ), ITAIPU Binacional and the International Energy Agency (IEA) to discuss hydropower’s role to meet climate related sustainable development goals. Â鶹ÊÓƵ is well suited to achieve the goals through generation of clean energy, providing long-term water availability and reducing risks and harms of water related natural disasters. Â
The climate agenda requires close cooperation and partnership at national, regional, and global levels; thus, a complimentary goal is to showcase that joint development of hydropower resources provides good opportunity to improve climate action planning and implementation. Â
In its 2021 Â鶹ÊÓƵ Special Market Report, the International Energy Agency (IEA) reports that hydropower accounts for nearly a third of the world’s capacity for flexible electricity supply and has the potential to provide even more. No country has come close to achieving 100% renewables without hydropower in the energy mix.
Therefore, the overall outcome of this event is to provide messages and recommendations that could help incentivise new sustainable hydropower projects and bridge the gap between planned versus needed capacity. This event is also aimed at providing a platform for different stakeholders to collaborate and amplify their work. Â
Guiding questions: Â
- What are the advantages of the hydropower development compared to other renewable energy resources? Â
- What can hydropower development do for contribution to the Climate Agenda? Â
- How could we get more finances resources for hydropower development? Â
