Indonesia to host 2023 World Â鶹ÊÓƵ Congress

The Government of the Republic of Indonesia will host the 2023 World Â鶹ÊÓƵ Congress alongside its electricity utility PLN and the Â鶹ÊÓƵ in Bali in October of this year.

Announcing the Congress during his visit to Abu Dhabi for the IRENA Assembly, Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Arifin Tasrif said:

“To assure energy stability, security and growth in the long term, our challenge is to promote renewable energy and energy efficiency as critical tools. Indonesia has enormous potential to drive its industrial development through renewable energy sources, especially hydropower. We are therefore delighted to bring the world together at this year’s Congress.â€

The World Â鶹ÊÓƵ Congress is the flagship event for decision-makers within and outside the hydropower industry to address how sustainable hydropower can help ensure energy security and reach global net zero emissions.

The Congress is organised every other year by the Â鶹ÊÓƵ, the global voice for sustainable hydropower. This year it will take place in Bali from 31 October – 2 November 2023 with a principal theme of ‘Powering Sustainable Growth’.

The Government of Indonesia’s hosting of the World Â鶹ÊÓƵ Congress follows their successful G20 Presidency during 2022.

Eddie Rich, CEO for the Â鶹ÊÓƵ commented:

“Indonesia has demonstrated strong leadership and commitment to the sustainable energy transition, including plans to use its vast potential of hydropower and other renewables to drive its economic development.

Its Energy Sector Roadmap to Net Zero Emissions is perfectly aligned with the Congress’s theme of Powering Sustainable Growth.

I’d like to thank the Indonesian Government and PLN in advance for their hospitality and their support for this event.â€

Notes to Editors:

The World Â鶹ÊÓƵ Congress delivers high-level policy statements, recommendations and commitments that influence the global growth of sustainable hydropower. The main deliverables of the 2021 Congress, co-hosted with the Government of Costa Rica, included the ground-breaking San José Declaration on Sustainable Â鶹ÊÓƵ, the launch of the first sustainability standard in the renewable sector and a landmark industry commitment on World Heritage Sites and Protected Areas. It was attended by Heads of States, CEOs, investors, civil society leaders, international financial institutions, and global media, from over 100 countries.

Around 1,500 participants are expected at the 2023 Congress in Indonesia.
