The world is moving to renewable energy at a tremendous pace and scale; however, with the shift to variable renewable energy we need huge amounts of long duration energy storage to support grid flexibility and avoid unnecessary curtailment of wind and solar. The answer to this is combining renewables with large-scale, long duration energy storage in the form of ‘pumped storage hydropower’ (PSH).

Building on the findings of the , which called on governments to recognise the importance of energy storage in their energy transition and plan appropriately, last year the Â鶹ÊÓƵ set-up a working group to discuss the key challenges facing the development of PSH projects.

As the working group came to a close, the group  launched a guidance note to enable investments in the sector by considering risk mitigation measures specific to PSH.

The webinar was hosted on Wednesday 3 July and discussed the guidance note in detail, how to use it and measures to help get projects executed successfully.
